IT’S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE
In a time when big-box chain stores selling 50-gallon drums of mayonnaise has become quite the norm, I always like to see small local businesses being appreciated. When photographer Olivier Parnet set out to showcase the epitome of a blossoming local economy on eclectic L’avenue du Mont-Royal in Montreal, though, he ran into the same problem over and over again: shop owners, while passionate about their unique businesses, were simply uncomfortable showing their faces in front of the camera. The resulting portraits, laced with warmth and personality, landed Parnet a gallery exhibition, a radio interview and coffee-table book. Just goes to show that sometimes the answer to a design challenge is right in front of your face.
