Brand X-ing


Vienna is one of my favorite places on the planet. But that’s not why I’m writing about it here in our blog about branding. I’m writing about Vienna because this onetime cultural center of the world continues to innovate long after the days when Mozart walked its streets. In fact, the city’s latest innovation has to do with walking those streets: Austria’s capital has introduced same-sex pedestrian crossing signals.

Now, when pedestrians are checking the signals to see whether or not it’s safe to cross they are also being given a message of tolerance. The new signals featuring two same-sex icons holding hands as they stop or go are at 49 intersections around Vienna.

Applause to The Imperial City, whose brand remains strong throughout history thanks to breakthrough thinking like this. I look forward to seeing these signs in person when I visit Vienna this summer.
